SEO for Service Businesses: The 90-Day Playbook

SEO is not magic. It is infrastructure. Here is a practical 90-day plan to start ranking for the searches your customers are making.

Search engine optimization for service businesses is not about gaming an algorithm. It is about making sure your business shows up when your ideal customer is actively looking for what you do. That is it.

Most service business owners think SEO is too complicated, too slow, or too expensive. The truth is that a focused 90-day SEO sprint can create a foundation that drives leads for years.

Days 1 Through 30: Foundation

Start with keyword research. Use free tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to find what your customers actually search for. Focus on service-plus-location keywords: 'pressure washing Dallas,' 'lawn care Frisco TX,' 'mobile detailing near me.'

Build or optimize your service pages. Each core service you offer should have its own dedicated page with a unique title tag, meta description, H1 heading, 500 or more words of content, and a clear call to action. Do not lump all your services on one page.

Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics. These are free and they are non-negotiable. You need to know what is working.

Days 31 Through 60: Content and Authority

Start a blog. Publish two posts per month minimum, targeting long-tail keywords your customers search for: 'how often should you detail your car,' 'best time to aerate your lawn in Texas,' 'how much does pressure washing a driveway cost.'

These informational posts build topical authority and drive organic traffic from people in your service area who will eventually need your services.

Build local citations. Get your business listed on Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, and industry-specific directories. Make sure your name, address, and phone number are identical everywhere.

Days 61 Through 90: Acceleration

Start building backlinks. Reach out to local business associations, chambers of commerce, and complementary businesses for link exchanges or guest posts. Sponsor a local event and get a link from their website.

Optimize for featured snippets by structuring your content with clear questions and concise answers. Many service-related searches trigger featured snippets, and ranking in position zero can dramatically increase your visibility.

Review your Search Console data. See which keywords you are ranking for on page two and create or optimize content specifically targeting those terms. Moving from position 15 to position 8 can triple your traffic for that keyword.

The Long Game

SEO is not a quick fix. But the work you put in during these 90 days creates assets that appreciate over time. A blog post written today can drive leads 18 months from now. A well-optimized service page can rank for years. That is the power of building infrastructure instead of running campaigns.
